occupational therapy
…what exactly is occupational therapy?
Great starting question and you’re not alone, a lot of people are not clear on what is and what is not occupational therapy. My favorite explanation is this:
‘Occupation’ is simply what you do. We have hundreds of occupations that get us out of bed in the morning, out and into the world, and back home again. From brushing teeth, to getting dressed, to interacting with co-workers, to organizing a to-do list, to grocery shopping, to driving home…the list goes on.
Where I, as an occupational therapist enter the scene: I offer a trained professional eye to identify what gets stuck in these occupations and problem solving thru it with you. Things get stuck for a multitude of reasons, medical diagnoses among those reasons. My expertise in understanding the brain-body connection as is relates to the function and dysfunction with any given occupation(s) is what allows me to support individuals and their families.
yoga
what is the yoga offering about?
‘Yoga’ means simply ‘to yoke’. This is a practice of integration— to infuse the body, mind, and spirit with breath and radical acceptance. I’ve been instructing yoga since 2018 and believe that this practice can be a modality of healing for the whole person on an individual level and healing humans lead to healing communities—both local and global. In my yoga offerings, the asanas (physical shapes) are a part of the package, yes, and I also offer the breath work, meditative, and philosophical approaches to soak-in all this practice has to offer.
My current offerings are private yoga sessions or small groups. I also often incorporate yoga into my occupational therapy and coaching sessions as appropriate.
reiki
tell me more…
Reiki (ray-key) is a Japanese healing modality that uses Universal energy to facilitate flow within the body and promote relaxation. This is a non-invasive technique and can be done with or without physical touch.
I received my training and attunement in 2019 with a level 2 reiki certification. One of my favorite aspects of this offering is that it is highly sustainable, no equipment required, can be done anywhere, and is whatever the recipient wants and/or needs it to be.
My current reiki offerings are private reiki sessions, small group sessions, in conjunction with a yoga practice, and incorporated in my occupational therapy sessions. Another important aspect of reiki is that it is only available should a person be willing to receive, so if it’s not for you, no worries! The reiki can’t hurt you :)
